Tricky Bricks

So bricks are great, they have been around for a fairly enormous time – 7000 years or so. Architect Bill Dunster of UKbased eco-practice ZED factory believes that investing in energy-saving building practice will future-proof structures for at least 125 years.
Research currently under way at the University of Newcastle has shown double brick or “cavity” brick construction to be the most effective way of building thermal mass into the average family home. The research showed that an insulated cavity brick home was almost 18 degrees cooler than the outside temperature, without any artificial cooling.
The rebirth and redesign of the Corner Store building into the “Corner Store Café” (thumb) by Richards and Spence Architects was so successful that it was awarded first prize in the Outdoor category of Think Brick’s prestigious “Horbury Hunt” awards for 2011, while Matthew Gribben Architecture won the Residential and Reuse category for the stunning revisioning of a former builder’s yard into a twenty-first century home.
