Sydney Town Hall - sustainability

The City of Sydney is “greening” Sydney Town Hall and making the building more sustainable by introducing a range of environmentally friendly initiatives:
• 240 state-of-the-art solar panels incorporating the latest technology from the University of NSW installed on the roof of Sydney Town Hall which will help reduce the City's environmental footprint. The panels are the largest photovoltaic installation in the Sydney CBD and will produce 48 kilowatts of power at their peak.
• 1700 new energy efficient lights installed along with an energy efficient lighting system which includes smart sensors to detect unused areas within the building and switch lights off
• A more sustainable climate control system designed specifically for Sydney Town Hall which is more energy efficient and will use up to 30 per cent less power
• New hydraulics and storm water infrastructure throughout the building will help reduce water use by between 15 to 20 per cent
• Repair and replacement of damaged historic Welsh slate roof tiles from the original source in Wales and new roof insulation which will help retain heat in winter and cool the building during hot weather
• Additional bike racks in Druitt Street and in Sydney Square
The Live Green House will showcase some of the sustainability improvements made to Sydney Town Hall. The house will be on display in Sydney Square (between Sydney Town Hall and St Andrew’s Cathedral) from Friday March 5- Sunday March 7.
The house will provide information on sustainable technology and innovation and will host a range of experts talking about energy, water, waste, rebates and incentives, and lifestyle options such as gardens/growing food, as well as showcasing green products.
A Cycling Centre will also be set up next to the Live Green House to offer information on the City’s cycle network and to educate people on the benefits of cycling.
The centre will be giving away free 'Live Green Sydney Cycling Maps' showing preferred cycle routes to get around the City and puncture repair kits. There will also be a bike mechanic on site to service bikes for free and several bike maintenance workshops over the weekend to teach the basics of bike maintenance, including changing a flat tire and fixing your breaks so bike riders can cycle safely and reliably.
Sydney Town Hall will officially reopen to the public on Friday 5 March 2010 with three days of celebrations including open days, exhibitions and two free music performances.
