Earth Check

Earth Check

Since 1992, when the principles underlying sustainable development were first outlined at the Rio Earth Summit, an avalanche of terms has been coined to define environmentally sustainable tourism; most of which lack definition and clarity.

As science and technology have matured – with the help of a significant investment of money and research – the yard stick with which we measure the performance of businesses and their impacts upon the Earth, must evolve and strengthen accordingly.

“For more than a decade, EarthCheck science has underpinned the world’s leading sustainability Programs for the travel and tourism industry, “explained Stewart Moore, CEO of the Brisbane-based company. “During this time, we’ve seen environmental challenges befall a number of market leaders, who relied on check-box solutions to mitigate risk.”

EC3 Global is the world's largest certifier of sustainable travel and tourism operators; with more than 1000 clients in over 60 countries. They provide benchmarking, certification and performance improvement systems to help businesses measure operational efficiencies.

Wholly owned by the Australian Government funded Sustainable Tourism Cooperative Research Centre (STCRC), EC3 Global has released to market the Earthcheck Program. In a world that’s awash with certification schemes that apply varying Standards that conform to the lowest common denominator, for many, there’s little protection against corporate liability.

EarthCheck complies with the most stringent of international GHG reporting protocols. The program is used by many of the biggest names in the business; among them hospitality giants such as InterContinental Hotel Group (IHG), Carlson Asia Pacific, Sandals Resorts International, Langham, Banyan Tree, Alila, Six Senses and Dusit.

The hospitality leaders have moved to EarthCheck and consider it to be the next generation in benchmarking and certification. Their decision will be keenly watched by others in the industry who are monitoring the impact of the emerging carbon economy and taking note of how new legislation is likely impact on margins.

“We feel that EarthCheck is the most stringent and relevant benchmarking tool for us to first measure our performance, then systematically take actions for improvement,” says Michael Kwee of Banyan Tree Global Foundation Limited. “The robust system and strength of the underlying research have given us the confidence to entrust EarthCheck to provide us with accurate measures and benchmark intelligence.”

The timely introduction of the EarthCheck Program, in addition to Scopes 1, 2 and 3 carbon reporting, is a welcome tool for all operators.
