Green thumbs needed for Sydney city crops
The sustainable Summer Garden will be a taste of the City’s much-anticipated City Farm, a destination for food production and sustainable living in the heart of Sydney.
Lord Mayor Clover Moore said volunteers could help turn the first clumps of soil on this important fresh food farm.
“We need people to plant, water, weed, harvest and, perhaps most importantly, learn and share their knowledge about food production,” the Lord Mayor said.
“It will be the first chance for local green thumbs and weekend gardeners to get involved in the City Farm in a practical, hands-on way.”
“The Summer Garden is one of the first steps toward our exciting City Farm. It’s about bringing the countryside into the heart of our city and growing healthy food locally.”
Sydney Park’s Summer Garden will be located between the brick kilns and the playground from mid-January until late March next year. Volunteers are needed from 19 January until 24 March.
The garden is still in the planning stages but may include natives, flowers and edible plants, chickens and bees as well as a sunflower garden for children to harvest the seeds and grain for cooking.
Each weekend there will be free community events, including meet-a-farmer workshops, sheepdog trials, paddock-to-plate discussions, and urban gardening tutorials.
The project will end with a celebratory Harvest Day on 24 March, when volunteers, residents and visitors will literally enjoy the fruits of their labour.
Sydney Park will be the one of two venues for the projected City Farm, covering approximately one hectare of the park. There will be a separate site in Ultimo where it’s hoped the project will tie into the Powerhouse Museum’s expertise in education and learning.
“The split City Farm model will offer the best of both worlds. The inner-Sydney city farm linked to the Powerhouse Museum in Ultimo and less than five kilometres away, fruit, vegetables, orchards and flowers will flourish in Sydney Park.”
The City Farm project is collaboration between the City of Sydney and the Powerhouse Museum.
